Remember the Woodchuck

I saw him the other day in the yard.  I was struck dumb!  In MY yard??

A WOODCHUCK!

Forgive me if I blather, but I grew up in this town – in this neighborhood – played in the woods throughout my childhood.  Never did I see such a thing!  Rabbits – on occasion.  Squirrels – a plethora of them.  Chipmunks – a scurrying glimpse.  But – never a real live woodchuck!

This morning, as I was making the tea with a melancholy stare out the kitchen window – fighting the worry of hurricanes threatening up the coastline – A WOODCHUCK!  Standing upright and looking at me from the middle of the yard!

Oh – how I hoped he would get in good camera range – not to be, of course, for this shy guy.  I was delighted!  My melancholy fled at the unusual and unexpected sighting – just like the last time . . .

My very first woodchuck sighting was a special moment when the Lord so gently taught me about not being so rushed about in my heart that I miss the unexpected little joys and simple pleasures He sprinkles about in my life just to delight me – saying, “I love you . . . I’m caring for you . . . Trust me for all good things and beauty . . .”

Hurricanes over the weekend notwithstanding – school opening on Monday and my classroom furniture not arrived and a mountain to climb before students arrive . . .

Be sure to STOP for the simple pleasure of a woodchuck sighting in your backyard.  And, be at peace . . .

  1. It is quite wonderful isn’t it that God does use these simple things to draw our attention and to remind us that He is in control and to trust Him – to slow down. I was listening to Steve Green’s song, “Be At Rest Oh My Soul” based in Psalm 116:7 – The LORD surely has been good – He hasn’t changed no matter what external circumstances may be.
Praying for your safety and for the storm to pass by.
    God Bless,
    KAthy

  2. My woodchuck is a hummingbird. For some reason we just don’t have hummingbirds here at the house. We’ve tried the feeder, and planting red flowers. Both have brought in butterflies, definitely welcome. But the Lord brought a hummingbird right to the bay window shortly after I lost my baby 4 years ago. My husband and I were just having one of those moments where the grief is just too much and we were both crying and holding each other. Suddenly I caught sight of the hummingbird and it was like a bit of magic. God knew. It was intentional and personal. It acted like it was actually trying to get into the house. And it didn’t fly away. We got up and walked to the window. Laughed. Watched some more. It seemed like minutes before it left… It was even more than a simple pleasure. It was our comfort straight from the Throne.

    Blessings, Debbie

  3. Don’t you just love it when God makes a special appearance? I’ve been sharing some of those lately myself.

I’m trying to think if I’ve ever seen a woodchuck – I don’t think I have. Did you happen to ask him how much wood he could chuck (if he could chuck wood)?? 🙂

Praying that God will be with you – as literal storms loom, and also the impending start of your school year. Know that the Master of the Storm is watching – and He will still the waves or calm your heart!

    GOD BLESS!

  6. Kathy,
You have touched my heart with this post of God’s blessing to you to slow down and enjoy His beauty by way of the woodchuck showing up in your yard. I hope you get everything done that needs doing and while enjoying the path that gets you there.

  7. WHat a treat~ what I find delightful is that you find joy in the simple blessings and grace that surround you! I do as well. Funny that some people miss so much happiness because they fail to recognize it.

  8. “I scolded myself for assuming the average when the extraordinary had been before me.”

That’s my favorite part from the linked post and original wooodchuck story. I love this, and it epitomizes the concept of simple pleasure to me.

  9. WOW .. no worries .. he has been captured in the camera of your memories and thank you for the gentle reminder – that it is important to stop and truly experience the moment that HE gives us to enjoy. I hope your classroom furniture arrives in time… if not no stress .. a few pillows on the floor will do …

Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who are in the path of this storm .. that all may stay safe!!! wishing you a fabulous week-end..xo HHL
